“I love the Pottery Barn furniture in X’s movies X directs.” - real statement from super famous film person’s relative to me who is not making movies as a non-film-y spectator human
“I love that furniture from movie Z to movie Z” - my mom
Has happened a few times about that person. Person X is a nice person. Who is to say? I have whole conversations with the public of non-film-y people about brands of furniture or clothing, and not clothing from a view of Oscar worthy design. Clothing from, “Ooooooh, fashionistah! Want to shop that.” You want your furniture, or the dresses and suits on people to speak on behalf of the character, not replace the characters. The artistry, never the audience start to end saying, “When I leave the theatre, I am sooooo Googling it.”
That said, are you ever in a film conversation going, “Hey, you know, Oppenheimer and Batman Begins have super good Pottery Barn everywhere. You focus on the great directing or the acting performances brought together in the grand scheme of things in Mr. Nolan’s work.
I am so outgoing in person, so withdrawn online, feeling the uncertainty of what to say on my diary here. Here you go, a fly on the wall conversation point I have with everyone creating a small goal of mine in my filmmaking.
xoxo,
Nic
